CARE OF YOUR WOOD FLOORS
Congratulations on your new wood floors. They represent a sound investment that should give you years of service and pleasure.
The finish on your floor is very hard and durable. However, it is still possible to scratch it. But most scratches are small and really need no particular or immediate attention. An accumulation of them indicates that the floor is wearing. Then be sure to consider the application of another coat of finish, which will usually cover surface scratches, offer further protection, and render further sanding in the future unnecessary.
Consider placing throw rugs in front of kitchen sinks and any doors leading to the outside to catch dirt which might otherwise mar the floor. Frequently moved chairs may need glides on the legs to help prevent wear. Avoid heavy, pointed objects (such as spike heels) on the floor.
Never wax your floor, nor clean it with any wax substance or solvent. DO NOT use any of the following products or products similar in nature; Fantastik, Formula 409, dishwashing detergent, powderd all-purpose cleaners, Murphy's Oil Soap, paste wax, Endust, Pledge, or other dusting products or floor polishes. These kinds of products, while they may not harm your floor, might leave a residue that would preclude the application of additional finish coats as they become necessary.
To clean and maintain your new floors, simply sweep or vacuum them as you would tile or linoleum. You may wash them as needed with Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaner, which is an excellent and inexpensive wood floor cleaner. We have it available here at our shop or it can be found at Ace Hardware stores. (Many wood floor owners also like to use a 5% white vinegar to water mixture.)
A very light damp mopping will not harm your floors, though a heavy or constant soaking may. A good rule of thumb, is to use no more water than will evaporate entirely in 5 minutes. The finish on your floors will resist most spills: simply wipe spills up with a sponge or mop.
Most manufacturers recommend letting your new coat of finish cure completely, usually about one week for water-base finishes and two weeks for oil-base polyurethane, before washing your floor or placing rugs on it.
As always, if we can be of further help, please do not hesitate to contact us.
